1. All communications must support the branding effort.

If your communication doesn't support the branding effort...if it's not strategic...not consistent with the positioning...or deliver the appropriate audiences, it should not be done.

This should be the litmus test for all communications whether advertising, PR, direct marking, promotions, websites or online marketing. Otherwise you run the risk of diluting your brand equity.

2. It pays to think outside the box.
There are lots of companies clamoring for attention (and shelf space). You have to rise about the fray if you want to be heard.
